Gandi tragedies and triumphs?

Hi, I must admit I am a little confused about your question. I assume that you mean Gandhi, the Indian independence leader, but since you filed your question under Theater and Acting and not History...

Well, I 'm going to assume that you meant what where some of the triumphs and tragedies in the life of Gandhi and do my best to answer.

The two big ones are:

Triumph - the independence of India from Britain

Tragedy - the bloody fighting between religious groups that lead to the creation of Pakistan as a separate state (and later Bangladesh)

Otherwise obviously he worked hard to abolish the ''untouchable'' caste in Indian society and was largely successful. He also managed to achieve more equality for women, and was successful at forcing the South African government to negotiate recognition of Indian South Africans. The famous ''salt march'' in which Gandhi lead thousands of people hundreds of miles on a march and then illegally made salt. Hundreds of thousands of Indians participated.

Tragedies - Obviously his assassination in 1948 was a tragedy, perhaps more for the world than for Gandhi himself. He would probably see as a tragedy the violence that erupted in the early twenties involving followers of his non-cooperation movement. This violence lead Gandhi to call of the movement completely because he felt that the violence was only going to continue and to worsen. Generally any time the independence struggle lead someone towards violence Gandhi would experience a tragedy. He used hunger strikes, threatening to not eat until he died in order to convince people to stop fighting.
